# Government assistance programs, by what you need

Most help is run by your state or county with federal money. Pick the need, check the rules and apply directly with the agency, never through a paid middleman.

Quick answer

Government assistance programs are mostly federal money run by your state or county: SNAP and WIC for food, LIHEAP for energy bills, Lifeline for phone and internet, unemployment insurance after a job loss, TANF for cash help to families, and SSI for people with low income who are disabled or 65 and older. Benefits.gov and USA.gov list them, and 211 points you to local offices.

## How to apply without getting stuck

1. **Apply with the agency itself.** Applications for public benefits are free. Anyone charging a fee to "unlock" a grant or benefit is a scam.
2. **Gather proof once.** Photo ID, Social Security numbers, pay stubs or a letter about lost income, rent or lease, and utility bills cover most applications.
3. **Apply for several at once.** Many state portals take one application for SNAP, cash help and Medicaid together.
4. **Keep every notice.** Agencies send interview dates and deadlines by mail; missing one can close a case.

## Common questions

### Is there one place to apply for all benefits?

There is no single federal application, but many states combine SNAP, TANF and Medicaid on one state portal. Benefits.gov has a questionnaire that lists programs you may qualify for.

### Do I have to pay back government assistance?

Programs like SNAP, WIC, LIHEAP and Lifeline are benefits, not loans. You may have to repay amounts paid by mistake, so report income changes as required.

### Can I get help if I am working?

Yes. Most programs look at income and household size, not whether you have a job. Many working households qualify for SNAP, WIC, LIHEAP and the Earned Income Tax Credit.

## Disclosures

**Not a lender.** NeededCash.com is not a lender, loan broker, or agent of any lender and does not make credit decisions. We operate a free matching service that shares the information you submit with participating licensed lenders and lending partners, who may contact you with an offer and who pay us a referral fee.

**Rates and terms.** Each lender sets its own rates, fees, and terms and will disclose them in writing as required by the federal Truth in Lending Act before you sign. Personal and installment loans from lenders in our network typically carry APRs from about 5.99% to 35.99% with terms from 3 to 84 months. Representative example: a $5,000 loan over 36 months at 15.99% APR has 36 payments of $175.76 and a total cost of $6,327.36.
