After a job loss

# How much unemployment will I get?

Every state uses its own formula, but the idea is the same: a share of your earlier wages, up to a weekly maximum, for a limited number of weeks.

Quick answer

Unemployment pays a share of your past wages, usually from a base period of the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters, up to a weekly maximum your state sets. Many states replace roughly half of prior weekly pay before hitting the cap, and most pay for up to 26 weeks, though some pay fewer. Your state's monetary determination letter gives the exact amount.

## How to estimate yours

1. **Find your base period wages.** Check pay stubs or W-2s for the quarters your state uses.
2. **Use the state's calculator.** Many state labor departments post one; the formula differs by state.
3. **Compare to the maximum.** High earners usually get the state cap.
4. **Plan for taxes.** Unemployment is taxable income. You can ask to have 10% withheld for federal tax.

## Common questions

### Is unemployment taxed?

Yes, it counts as federal taxable income and in many states as state income. You can choose withholding when you file.

### Can I work part time and get unemployment?

In most states you can earn some money and still get a reduced benefit. Report all earnings each week.

### How long does unemployment last?

Most states pay up to 26 weeks, and some pay fewer depending on the unemployment rate. Extensions only happen when laws provide them.

**Not a lender.** NeededCash.com is not a lender, loan broker, or agent of any lender and does not make credit decisions. We operate a free matching service that shares the information you submit with participating licensed lenders and lending partners, who may contact you with an offer and who pay us a referral fee.

**Rates and terms.** Each lender sets its own rates, fees, and terms and will disclose them in writing as required by the federal Truth in Lending Act before you sign. Personal and installment loans from lenders in our network typically carry APRs from about 5.99% to 35.99% with terms from 3 to 84 months. Representative example: a $5,000 loan over 36 months at 15.99% APR has 36 payments of $175.76 and a total cost of $6,327.36.
