After a job loss

# How to file for unemployment

Unemployment insurance is run by each state. File as soon as you lose work or hours, because benefits generally start from when you apply.

Quick answer

File for unemployment with the state where you worked, usually online, as soon as your job ends or your hours are cut. Have your Social Security number, ID, employers' names and addresses for the last 18 months, dates worked and the reason you separated. After you are approved, request payment each week or every two weeks and report any work search the state requires.

## Steps

1. **Find your state's site.** CareerOneStop links every state unemployment office.
2. **File your initial claim.** Answer questions about why you left exactly; mistakes slow the claim.
3. **Watch for a monetary determination.** It shows the wages the state used and your weekly amount.
4. **File weekly or biweekly claims.** You must request each payment and report any earnings.
5. **Keep a work search log.** Most states require a set number of job contacts per week.

## Common questions

### Can I get unemployment if I quit?

Usually only with good cause as defined by your state, such as unsafe conditions or some family reasons. Apply and explain; the state decides.

### Can I get unemployment if I was fired?

Often yes, unless it was for misconduct as your state defines it. Being let go for poor fit or performance is usually not misconduct.

### What if my claim is denied?

The notice explains how to appeal and the deadline, often short. File the appeal and keep filing weekly claims while it is pending.

## Disclosures

**Not a lender.** NeededCash.com is not a lender, loan broker, or agent of any lender and does not make credit decisions. We operate a free matching service that shares the information you submit with participating licensed lenders and lending partners, who may contact you with an offer and who pay us a referral fee.

**Rates and terms.** Each lender sets its own rates, fees, and terms and will disclose them in writing as required by the federal Truth in Lending Act before you sign. Personal and installment loans from lenders in our network typically carry APRs from about 5.99% to 35.99% with terms from 3 to 84 months. Representative example: a $5,000 loan over 36 months at 15.99% APR has 36 payments of $175.76 and a total cost of $6,327.36.
