Old paychecks, deposits, refunds and insurance payouts end up with the state when the holder cannot find you. Claiming it is free.

Search your state's unclaimed property website, plus every state where you have lived or worked, or use MissingMoney.com, which the state administrators' association endorses. Search your name, maiden name and past addresses. If something comes up, file a claim directly with the state and send the ID or proof of address it asks for. Searching and claiming are free.
