Paying without a bank

# How to fill out a money order

Money orders are a safe way to pay rent or a bill without a checking account, as long as you fill them out right away and keep the receipt.

Quick answer

To fill out a money order, write the recipient's name on the Pay to line, your name and address in the purchaser or from section, and an account or invoice number on the memo line. Sign it only where it says purchaser or signer, not as the endorser. Keep the receipt with the serial number so you can track or replace it. Buy money orders at the post office, banks and many stores.

## Step by step

1. **Fill it out at the counter.** Blank money orders are like cash if lost.
2. **Pay to.** The full name of the person or company.
3. **Purchaser.** Your name and address.
4. **Memo.** Account number or what it pays for.
5. **Sign and keep the receipt.** Track it by serial number if needed.

## Avoid scams

Never accept a money order for more than you are owed and send back the difference. Fake money orders work like fake checks.

## Common questions

### Where can I buy a money order?

Post offices, many banks and credit unions, and some grocery and convenience stores.

### Can I cancel a money order?

Often yes, with the receipt, for a fee. Ask where you bought it.

### How do I cash a money order?

At the issuer, a bank where you have an account, or some stores. Bring ID.

## Disclosures

**Not a lender.** NeededCash.com is not a lender, loan broker, or agent of any lender and does not make credit decisions. We operate a free matching service that shares the information you submit with participating licensed lenders and lending partners, who may contact you with an offer and who pay us a referral fee.

**Rates and terms.** Each lender sets its own rates, fees, and terms and will disclose them in writing as required by the federal Truth in Lending Act before you sign. Personal and installment loans from lenders in our network typically carry APRs from about 5.99% to 35.99% with terms from 3 to 84 months. Representative example: a $5,000 loan over 36 months at 15.99% APR has 36 payments of $175.76 and a total cost of $6,327.36.
