Yearly salary ($)

Quick answer

Multiply your hourly rate by the hours you work in a week, then by the weeks you are paid in a year. Full time at 40 hours for 52 weeks is 2,080 hours, so $18.50 an hour comes to $38,480 a year before taxes, about $3,207 a month or $1,480 every two weeks. Lower the weeks if you have unpaid time off.

## Reading the result

- **Per year** is the number to compare with a salary offer.
- **Every two weeks** is what a biweekly paycheck looks like before deductions. There are 26 of them in most years, which is why two months a year have a third check.
- **Monthly** is yearly pay divided by 12, useful for comparing with rent and other monthly bills.

## What the calculator leaves out

Take-home pay is lower than these figures because of federal and state income tax, Social Security and Medicare, and any health or retirement deductions. Overtime is also left out: under federal law most hourly workers earn time and a half after 40 hours in a week, so add those hours separately if you work them regularly.

## Checking a wage against the market

If you want to know whether an offer is fair, the Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes median wages by job and metro area in its Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics. Your state's minimum wage may also be higher than the federal one; the Department of Labor keeps a table by state.

## Common questions

### How many work hours are in a year?

At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, 2,080. Many people use 2,000 to allow for two unpaid weeks. Change the weeks box to match your situation.

### How do I turn a salary into an hourly rate?

Divide the yearly salary by the hours you work in a year. A $45,000 salary at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is about $21.63 an hour. The lower part of the calculator does this for you.

### Why does my paycheck look smaller than the calculator says?

The calculator shows gross pay. Taxes and payroll deductions come out before the money reaches you. Your pay stub lists each deduction, and your employer's payroll office can explain any you do not recognize.
