Too good to clear

# Fake check scam: how it works

A check can look cleared in your account and still bounce days later. That gap is what fake check scams exploit.

Quick answer

In a fake check scam, someone sends you a check for a job, prize, sale or overpayment and asks you to send part of the money back or to someone else. Banks must make deposited funds available quickly, but a fake check can bounce days or weeks later, and you owe the bank the full amount. Never send money back from a check from someone you do not know.

## Common versions

| Story | Hook |
|---|---|
| Mystery shopper or job | "Use part of this check to buy gift cards for the evaluation" |
| Online sale | "I sent too much; refund the difference" |
| Prize or lottery | "Pay taxes and fees from this check" |
| Caregiver or assistant job | "Buy supplies from our vendor" |

## If you deposited one

Stop, do not send money, call your bank and report it to the FTC.

## Common questions

### How long does it take for a fake check to bounce?

It can take weeks, long after funds appear available. "Available" does not mean the check is good.

### Who pays if a fake check bounces?

You do. The bank reverses the deposit, and you are responsible for money you withdrew.

### Can I verify a check?

Call the bank it is drawn on using a number you look up yourself, not one printed on the check.
