Start with what is happening

# Money emergencies, one situation at a time

Pick the problem in front of you. Each guide gives the first calls to make, the free or low-cost help to try, and what to do if that is not enough in time.

Quick answer

Start with the bill or event that has a deadline, then call the people you owe before the due date: landlords, utilities and lenders often have hardship options they do not advertise. Dial 211 for local rent, utility and food help. If free help will not arrive in time, compare a small, fixed-payment loan against the cost of the late fee or shutoff.

## The first hour of a money emergency

1. **Write down the deadline.** The date rent is late, the shutoff date on the notice, the day the repair shop needs payment. Deadlines decide the order.
2. **Call before you miss it.** A payment arrangement agreed before the due date is easier to get than one after a default or a shutoff.
3. **Dial 211.** It is a free, confidential referral line run by local United Ways and partners that knows which local programs have money right now.
4. **Free up cash you already have.** Pause wants for a month, ask about payroll advances at work, and sell what you will not miss.
5. **Borrow last, and small.** If you must borrow, pick a fixed payment you can make from your next check and avoid anything that rolls over.

## When a loan is and is not the answer

A loan can bridge a short, certain gap, like a repair you need to keep working when your next paycheck covers the payment. It makes things worse when the shortfall repeats every month, because the payment becomes one more bill. If the gap is ongoing, a nonprofit credit counselor through the NFCC can help you rebuild the budget first.

### Need money before the help arrives?

Tell us how much and by when. We show what licensed lenders in your state can offer, and we will say so if a loan is not a good fit.

## Common questions

### What is the fastest free help for rent or bills?

Call the landlord or utility to ask for a payment arrangement, then dial 211. Local emergency funds move faster than federal programs, but they run out, so call early in the month.

### Will asking for a payment plan hurt my credit?

Asking does not. Late payments that are reported can. A written arrangement made before the due date usually keeps the account current as long as you follow it.

### Who can help me make a plan if everything is behind?

Nonprofit credit counseling agencies, many of them members of the National Foundation for Credit Counseling, offer free or low-cost budget reviews by phone.

## Disclosures

**Not a lender.** NeededCash.com is not a lender, loan broker, or agent of any lender and does not make credit decisions. We operate a free matching service that shares the information you submit with participating licensed lenders and lending partners, who may contact you with an offer and who pay us a referral fee.

**Rates and terms.** Each lender sets its own rates, fees, and terms and will disclose them in writing as required by the federal Truth in Lending Act before you sign. Personal and installment loans from lenders in our network typically carry APRs from about 5.99% to 35.99% with terms from 3 to 84 months. Representative example: a $5,000 loan over 36 months at 15.99% APR has 36 payments of $175.76 and a total cost of $6,327.36.
