Moving with no deposit saved

# Security deposit assistance when you need to move

Deposits and first month's rent are often the biggest barrier to a safer or cheaper home. Help exists, but it is usually tied to a reason for the move.

Quick answer

Security deposit help usually comes from local housing programs, community action agencies, charities and programs for veterans or people leaving homelessness, and it often pays the landlord directly. Call 211 and your public housing agency, explain why you are moving, and ask landlords whether they accept a deposit split over two or three months or a smaller deposit with a stronger rental history.

## Who tends to qualify

Deposit programs commonly prioritize people who are homeless or about to be, people fleeing domestic violence, veterans and their families, and households with a housing voucher who found a unit but cannot cover move-in costs. If you fit one of these groups, say so on the first call. If you do not, charity programs may still help with part of the cost.

## Ways to lower what you pay up front

- **Ask for installments.** Some landlords will split a deposit over the first few months, especially if your references are good. Some states set rules on deposits and installment options, so ask what is allowed where you live.
- **Offer proof you are reliable.** Pay stubs, a reference from your current landlord and on-time rent records can talk a landlord down.
- **Ask about move-in specials.** Some buildings reduce deposits to fill units.
- **Get your old deposit back on time.** Leave the old unit clean, take dated photos and give a forwarding address in writing.

## If you have a voucher

Your public housing agency or caseworker may know of landlord incentive or move-in funds. Ask before you sign anything.

### Still short on move-in costs?

If a program cannot pay before the lease date, see what licensed lenders in your state offer for a small, fixed-payment loan.

## Common questions

### Do I have to pay back security deposit assistance?

Most program grants are not repaid. Because the deposit belongs to you when you move out, some programs ask that it be returned to them or rolled to your next home. Read the terms.

### Can a charity pay my deposit directly to the landlord?

Yes, that is the usual way. The landlord may need to fill out a short form or provide a tax ID.

### Is a deposit alternative or deposit insurance a good idea?

Some landlords offer a monthly fee instead of a deposit. It lowers move-in cost but you do not get the money back and you may still owe for damage. Compare the total cost before you agree.

## Disclosures

**Not a lender.** NeededCash.com is not a lender, loan broker, or agent of any lender and does not make credit decisions. We operate a free matching service that shares the information you submit with participating licensed lenders and lending partners, who may contact you with an offer and who pay us a referral fee.

**Rates and terms.** Each lender sets its own rates, fees, and terms and will disclose them in writing as required by the federal Truth in Lending Act before you sign. Personal and installment loans from lenders in our network typically carry APRs from about 5.99% to 35.99% with terms from 3 to 84 months. Representative example: a $5,000 loan over 36 months at 15.99% APR has 36 payments of $175.76 and a total cost of $6,327.36.
