Overdraft protection: options and costs

Overdraft protection means different things at different banks. Some versions cost little; others are just fees with a nicer name.

Quick answer

Overdraft protection usually means one of three things: linking a savings account so the bank moves money automatically when checking runs short, often for a small fee or none; an overdraft line of credit, which charges interest; or standard overdraft coverage, where the bank pays the item and charges a fee. Linked savings is usually cheapest. If you would rather have a purchase declined, opt out of debit and ATM coverage.

Common questions

Is overdraft protection worth it?

Linked savings can be, if it is free or cheap. Standard coverage can cost more than the purchase it covers.

Can I turn off overdraft protection?

You can opt out of debit card and ATM overdraft coverage at any time. Ask about other types.

Does overdraft protection affect my credit?

Linked savings and standard coverage do not. An overdraft line of credit is a credit product and may.
