Quick answer
Write every bill on one page with the amount, due date and what happens if it is late. Pay housing, utilities, food and transportation to work first. Call each other creditor before the due date and offer a specific amount and date. Use 211 for rent and utility help, and be wary of anyone offering "grants to pay bills": the FTC says government grants for personal bills are scams.
Build the list
| Bill | Amount due | Due date | If late |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rent | Late fee, then possible eviction filing | ||
| Electric and heat | Late fee, then shutoff after notice | ||
| Car payment | Late fee, possible repossession | ||
| Phone | Suspension | ||
| Credit card | Late fee, credit damage after 30 days |

Call with an offer, not a question
"I can pay $150 today and the rest on the 20th" gets a better answer than "Can you help me?" Ask about hardship programs, fee waivers and due-date changes that match your payday. Write down the name, date and terms of every agreement.
Free up money this month
- Pause subscriptions and wants for one cycle.
- Check whether you qualify for SNAP or other benefits that cover a cost you are paying in cash.
- Sell something you will not miss.
- Ask your employer about a payroll advance.
When to get outside help
If you are behind every month, the problem is the budget, not the month. Nonprofit credit counselors through the NFCC can review your budget for free or low cost. If debt collectors are calling, the CFPB explains your rights.
One bill away from catching up?
If one payment would stop a shutoff or a late fee spiral, see what licensed lenders can offer for a small loan with a fixed payment.
Common questions
Are there grants to help pay bills?
Real help for bills comes from local programs like LIHEAP and emergency rent funds, not from a federal "grant" that calls or texts you. Anyone asking for a fee to get you a grant is a scammer.
Should I pay credit cards or rent first?
Rent. Missing rent can cost you your home, while a late card payment brings a fee and, after 30 days, credit damage. Make at least a call to every creditor.
Will a debt consolidation loan help?
It can if the new payment is lower and you stop adding debt, but it does not fix a monthly shortfall. Start with the budget, then compare options.

Rates and terms. Each lender sets its own rates, fees, and terms and will disclose them in writing as required by the federal Truth in Lending Act before you sign. Personal and installment loans from lenders in our network typically carry APRs from about 5.99% to 35.99% with terms from 3 to 84 months.
